Cashew is a type of nut that comes from the cashew tree, Anacardium occidentale, native to Brazil. The edible cashew nut grows outside the cashew apple, which is also edible but less commonly used. Cashews are kidney-shaped and have a mild, buttery flavor. They are sold shelled because the outer shell contains a toxic oil. Cashews are popular in both sweet and savory dishes.
